Roofing Sand for Construction

High-quality silica sand is an essential ingredient in the manufacturing of asphalt shingles. It forms the heart of the roofing granules embedded into the top of a shingle, providing a protective layer that resists UV radiation, adds color and improves shingle durability. A fine layer of sand on the back surface reduces friction between shingles, which facilitates packaging and accelerates installation.

Although asphalt shingles are more common, ceramic tile roofs are popular in specific regions, particularly the Southwest and Florida, where they complement Mediterranean and Spanish architectural styles and are suited for hot, sunny climates. The strength of roof tiles owes much to silica sand, which helps the tile maintain its rigidity by supporting the clay and other components during the baking process.

Silica sand plays an important role in flat-roof sealing systems. Built-up roofing, also known as BUR, is a popular approach that requires multiple layers of asphalt and felt, which are applied in alternating fashion and then topped with a layer of sand. The sand strengthens the roof, increases UV resistance, and, in the case of microcrystalline silica, provides reflective qualities that help with cooling.
