How Pre-Blended Footing Raised the Bar at Aiken Horse Park
At a premier equestrian venue, consistent, high-quality footing is essential. It is the surface that supports every horse, every rider, every jump and every round. It affects confidence, safety and performance. At a busy competition facility, it must perform under pressure.
That was the challenge at Bruce’s Field at Aiken Horse Park in Aiken, South Carolina. As one of the Southeast’s premier hunter/jumper venues, Bruce’s Field hosts major equestrian events throughout the year. Its competition and warm-up arenas accommodate thousands of horse-and-rider trips during the show season, and the demands on the footing are substantial.
During a major event, more than 100 horses may jump in a single arena in one day. In some cases, an arena at Bruce’s Field sees more use in a week than a private arena sees in a year. For the Aiken Horse Park Foundation, which continually invests in the facility's long-term performance, maintaining high-quality footing is central to its mission.
“Footing is a priority of any facility like this,” said Kate Boggan, Director of Marketing and Communications at the Aiken Horse Park Foundation. “If you don’t have good footing, people just don’t come.”
When the Foundation began a long-term arena improvement program, the team needed more than high-quality sand. They needed a better way to build the footing surface.
The Blending Challenge Behind Equestrian Footing
High-performance equestrian footing often combines carefully selected sand with synthetic footing fibers. The right blend can help support firmness, stability, drainage, moisture retention and cushion. Achieving that blend consistently can be challenging.
Traditionally, arena builders mix sand and fiber on site using cattle feed mixers, batch mixers or other improvised equipment. In many cases, the process begins by blending two types of sand to achieve the desired footing profile, then incorporating synthetic fiber into the sand blend.
On-site blending can require significant time, labor, equipment and staging space. Fiber can clump. Distribution can vary from one area to another. Packaging materials can create quality-control concerns. Even with experienced crews, producing a consistent blend across a large competition arena can be difficult.
To streamline installation at Bruce’s Field while delivering the footing performance the venue required, the Foundation partnered with arena builder Justin Potts of JP Surfaces. Potts selected a custom footing blend featuring BESTSAND™ EQ products from Covia combined with synthetic footing fibers. Then Covia moved the blending process upstream.
Pre-Blended Footing, Delivered Ready for Installation
For the renovation at Bruce’s Field, Covia blended the materials at its Lugoff, South Carolina facility and delivered approximately 1,500 tons of pre-blended footing material across roughly 60 truckloads.
The project became the first equestrian installation to use Covia’s continuous pre-blending process. The approach was designed to improve material consistency, reduce on-site labor and simplify arena installation. For Potts, the difference was significant. “This is a groundbreaking innovation, especially in this industry, and if this can continue, it’d be phenomenal,” he said.
How Pre-Blending Made All the Difference
Covia’s pre-blended approach helped the project team address several long-standing challenges:
- Eliminate on-site mixing: The footing material arrived already blended, reducing the costs and time needed for mixing equipment and labor at the site.
- More consistent material: The continuous pre-blending process helped improve consistency from truckload to truckload.
- Better fiber distribution: Synthetic fibers were distributed evenly throughout the footing material, helping reduce variation across the arena.
- A cleaner blend: Pre-blending enabled tighter quality control, reducing debris and foreign materials, such as packaging materials.
- A simpler installation process: With blending completed before delivery, the project team could focus on the arena base, drainage, grading and finishing.
“Every load I got was very consistent,” said Potts. “I’ve never seen the materials so well blended.” That consistency is critical. Horses and riders rely on predictable footing throughout the entire arena. A surface that feels different from one step to the next can affect confidence and performance. By delivering a uniform blend before the material reached the site, Covia helped reduce variables during installation and support a more consistent finished surface.
Sand Quality Comes First
While the blending process was central to the project’s success, the sand itself remained the foundation of the footing system.

The renovated arena quickly became one of the top-performing surfaces at Bruce’s Field. During its first major competition, the new footing demonstrated strong drainage performance. While significant rainfall created challenges elsewhere on the property, the renovated arena remained consistent and usable in wet conditions.
Riders and trainers noticed the difference. According to Aiken Horse Park staff, feedback was overwhelmingly positive. “People loved it,” said Boggan. Potts agreed. “This is the first time in my career that we’ve received absolutely positive feedback all the way around.”
